Cilia

Flagella

Flagella

The Flagella is a long whip like structure, propelling the organism forward. Flagella can act in many different ways. They can rotate in front and around the organism acting like a propeller or from behind in a whipping motion back and forth.

Cells can have multiple Flagella as seen in the picture above.

Cilia

Cilia are thousands of little hairs all around the cell. These hairs propel the organism through its environment, and allow it to move backwards and forwards.

This is seen the in the video to the left.

Another important function of cilia is to create a current for food into an organism.

Observe the video to the right, this organism is using circular cilia to suck in other organisms. You will also notice how it chooses what to eat and what not to eat.
